Friday's Forte: Why I am a Writer.

Afternoon, dearies! This week I’ve been introducing some new things one the blog including a facelift! What do ya think?

I’m introducing today as something as well: Friday’s Forte! Forte: a thing at which someone excels. Fridays, I’m tooting my own horn, as it were; I by no means excel at some of the things I’ll talk about but I’ll be at least decent... Consisting of mostly writing “things” and other little talents I have, Fridays will be fun and insightful.

Today’s forte is going to do with writing: I write. Plain and simple. I’m currently writing multiple short stories, one fantasy novel (which may turn into a series), and pieces of poetry. Nothing worth sharing with the public yet for many reasons.

I recently discovered, as in 2 years ago, that I wanted to be a writer. Before that, I was undecided between historian, museum curator, archaeologist, chef, or interior designer. Having so many things calling my name, I was bewildered and so I sat down and began to write out my emotions in the form of characters, discussions, and scenery. It became at first an outlet for stress and confusion. Now I write because I have to.

Don’t misunderstand what I’m trying to say. No one stands behind me with a gun and forces me to write. It’s not like that at all. Something inside compels me put my thoughts, hopes, fears, dreams onto paper. It’s scary at times, but the thrill of looking down at your notebook or computer screen and realizing that you have created a scenario, a character, and place that doesn’t exist… I love that feeling!

That’s not what it’s always like, believe me. Many times I have sent a desperate message to a friend… “I HAVE WRITER’S BLOCK!” Worst. Feeling. Ever. And sometimes, it has lasted for days at a time. But, the joy of finishing a chapter, a page, a paragraph, sometimes a sentence, is worth it all.

I read this quote recently and it struck me. It also convicted me of the fact that I should spend more time writing: “Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few tings, you’re doomed.” –Ray Bradbury.

With that little quote pushing me onwards,  it’s time to get back to writing, my dears!

Blessings!

New Challenge!

Greetings dear readers!

Tomorrow, I will be embarking on a journey, not physical, but rather through my mind. I will be traveling back in time, to the mid-1800’s out in the Wild West! I am beginning a challenge with a dear friend of mine, Sarah (Check out Sarah's blog here!).

We are going to do a writing challenge for the month of August! We’re going to write 2 short stories before midnight on August 31st! I could really use some prayer because, despite bouts of writing here and there, it’s hard to focus on writing when there is so much else to do. I am sure Sarah can attest to this.

Aside from that, daily life continues to be. I went to the city Saturday with my dad to scout out a trip that I am organizing for our church to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I have work five days a week for four hours a day. (MY NEW JOB IS AWESOME, BTW!!!)

After the writing challenge in August, I’m back to studying September 1st! American Government; yeah! If I am motivated, I will start that earlier, but we shall see.

Just a quick update! I will keep people updated during August on here because I will deactivate my Facebook for that month. So if we’re friends on Facebook, bookmark my blog so you can keep up with me! I’ll be back sometime in the beginning of September.

Blessings!

2013!

Greetings! We are already into the second month of 2013! I feel like so much has happened since I last posted!

The new year started out well- friends and family all around! My work schedule has changed very much with lots of different hours. Sometimes it's hard for me to remember where I am supposed to be on that particular day and time! But such is the life of a young adult.

In regards to school- I passed my science DSST test (Environment and Humanity) at the end of January! I would have like a slightly higher score, but I passed and so I was not going to complain at all! God is so good. That test was a breaking point for me. I'll explain later on.

I have now started American Literature. I had taken this test over a year ago, but I needed to pick another test to begin studying and this one looked, once again, fascinating. I have recently fallen back into reading again. I know! I have always loved reading, but life gets in the way and I forgot the feeling of sitting up late at night, curled under the covers with a good book! I am currently reading six (!) different books right now! Some of them are Jane Eyre, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Sons and Lovers, and The Beechers. Some of these I have read but I forgot how good they are. And besides all of this, there is nothing like the smell of a book.

In other news, I have made some important decisions. I am studying Journalism in the hopes of working for a magazine or newspaper. Television isn't my thing. But I will, ultimately, become a writer. It's always been something I like to do. But, quite honestly, I need to write. I don't want to write sometimes, but I force myself because if I don't, I feel like I'm suffocating. I'm drowning. It's my "therapy" if you will.

Okay, enough about that. Aside from my two jobs, church, school, and other miscellaneous things, I've been busy this year so far! But it's been a good busy. I am looking forward to new things, new experiences, starting new friendships, etc, this year! (I'm also giving the blog a "facelift.")

Blessings in 2013!
